The design of the new image of the Royal Route was based on insightful historical studies supplemented with urban and architectural analyzes.
Design solutions are characterized by restraint and economy in the selection of materials, architectural forms and colors. The main design assumption is to follow the context of the place and not to compete with the historical form of the existing buildings, as well as to emphasize the values of the historic urban interior of Długa Street and Długi Targ.
The project involves lowering the floor in the immediate vicinity of the Neptune Fountain and the construction of a two-step plinth, which will constitute a natural buffer between the fountain and the square. In addition, the platform can serve as a bench, stage, stand. This solution restores the historic display of the fountain, creates a delicate depression in the square, emphasizing the axis of the fountain and the Artus Court.
The project involves the re-use of the existing ballast slabs that build the identity of Gdańsk. The slabs are located along the facades of historic tenement houses, outlining the space that used to be occupied by porches. The middle track, between the old entrances, is filled with cut granite, the form of which is a modern interpretation of the old pavement.
